Sarah Meets Scumbro: A Weekend Full of Dad Sandals, Tie-Dye Tees, and Baggy Shorts

It's officially July, and I'm not sure about you--but I still can't figure out what my summer wardrobe is supposed to look like. I'm not a huge fan of wearing summer dresses all week long, the idea of athletic-wear permanently sticking to my body with the humidity sounds like a nightmare, and I don't think I can work the biker shorts or midi skirts quite like the Kardashian/Jenners.
So instead of seeking counsel from the "usual" style icons in my Instagram saved collection, I opted for a less traditional route. Inspired by Edith Young's Article called "I Dressed Like Pete Davidson for a Week, and I'll Never Be the Same", I took it into my own hands to be solely influenced by the modern day scumbro. I guess you could call it more of general take on Young's own escapade. I took ideas from famous scumbros like Davidson, such as Justin Bieber, John Mayer, and Jonah Hill.
My family spent the weekend in Des Moines, Iowa with weather ranging from 93 to 102 degrees, so I truly needed their best insight on how to wear breathable, comfortable clothing. If you're still wondering what in the heck 'scumbro' is, I will fill you in right now.
Urban dictionary describes it as such:
"An evolution of normcore. The scumbro is a hypebeast who wears streetwear brands like Supreme and Adidas but also Vermont mom brands like REI and Patagonia...and may even sneak in some Gucci. The word, or at least this definition, was most likely coined by Vanity Fair's Kenzie Briant in the article "Pete Davidson and the Rise of the Scumbro" in July 2018. As Briant explains, the scumbro's look is ALMOST ironic and looks dumpster-dive cheap but is actually expensive and very intentional. The world has been populated by scumbros at the hands of designers like Demna Gvasalia and Virgil Abloh. Classic Scumbros include Shia Labeouf, Pete Davidson, Justin Bieber, and Jonah Hill."
Because of my limited designer brand clothing, I opted for a budget-friendly version. Aka, spending no money at all. So a lot of the clothing I chose to wear was based on functionality with a slightly feminine twist, but fairly neutral. Going against the current, however, I'm opting to call it Scumgal*.
Anyways, I'll get on with your previous scheduled viewing of three different scumbro/scumgal outfits.
DAY 1.

I was feeling fine. fresh. cool. The A.C. was helping my mood. Despite the "ice-cold" look I had on, I was just trying to avoid the paparazzi that had staked out by my building's elevator. You know how it goes. ;P
The outfit is a tie-dye shirt that I found in my basement. Matt, I'm not sure--is this yours? I thought it was fun. The shorts are Mens Dockers. Dark blue. The shoes were a gift from my sister after back surgery. Skechers slide on with memory foam pads!!!

Ooooh. That saucy glance. I have a feeling an average scumbro wouldn't take the time to pull a "Smize" moment. But I went for it. The jacket is from a thrift store! The black purse is my sister's. And finally, the earrings are from a vintage store!

This look I'm giving is one of a scumgal ready to brave the heat. Should I take off the jacket? Probably.

DAY 2.
_____________________________________
On this fine day, we were out and about at the Des Moines farmers' market. It was quite hot outside, and so I decided to cool off in this 90sish bro-tank (a freebie from St. Olaf's Highlighter Dance back in '17?). The cap is a retro 'Life is Good' hat and the shorts are hand-me downs from my cousin, Emily. Unfortunately, the shoes I just bought. I normally don't like to buy many new things, but I didn't have the money for Chacos or Tevas and so I opted for these $20.00 dad sandals. Groovy. I know. And lastly, the earrings are from my mom and the green and white striped polo is secondhand.

DAY 3.
_____________________________________
This was on our last day in Des Moines. Our family had went to my sister's church (one of the best worship/services I've been to in a LONG TIME). Afterwards we went to grab a bite to eat at a cute cafe nearby. Unfortunately, the paparazzi heard about our stop and they were there to greet us at the door. I tried to walk past them with confidence, but we were in a hurry to get back to small-town Wisconsin.
The jacket is the same as Day 1, the sunglasses are my sisters, the tank top is Kat's, and the shoes are white hightop Reeboks, also my sister's. Lastly, LET'S TALK ABOUT THOSE SHORTS. They are Columbia retro cargo outdoor shorts from my dad's closet. Circa 1985? 96? Who knows! I love them and wear them regularly.
Well, I had a lot of fun doing this because I got to wear a lot of clothes that were functional, comfortable and made me feel cool as a cucumber. **Given the 100 degree weather!!!
So thanks to my personal photographer for all of the shots. Done on an iPhone 6s. Impressive, I know. @KatBluett
